Artist Statement

As a contemporary practitioner, I have a passion for Mindful Stitching and Narrative Textiles. I specialise in intricate hand embroidery pieces that draw on my own artwork, ranging from charcoal work and CAD sketches to intricately detailed watercolour gouache paintings. I am hardworking, dedicated, resilient and adaptable, constantly teaching myself new techniques and pushing myself to achieve my goals. My passion in life is blackwork design, and it is my ambition to continue modernising blackwork embroidery; making it accessible, contemporary and desirable to the next generation of embroiderers.

Designer of a blackwork range available in 16 countries world-wide.

Winner of UoH Excellence in Placement Award for Fashion and Textiles.

Appointed as a first year mentor at university, offering support to help struggling students achieve their best.

Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Independent travel is one of my passions and I try to visit overseas galleries whenever possible, as well as any art or textile exhibitions being held locally. This includes a solo creativity-focused visit to Iceland, where I spent a week exploring Reykjavik’s landmarks, galleries and enjoyed its vibrant arts scene. This links in with my keen interest in photography, a self-taught skill.

Employment - Trade Paints (2013 - Present)

Impressed by my enthusiasm for textiles, pattern and design, the management of Trade Paints created a new role for me as a weekend sales assistant in the Wallpaper and Fabric department. I am entrusted with serving customers, processing payments, taking orders, ordering stock, checking deliveries and helping customers with their interior design queries. I have been entrusted with progressively more advanced responsibilities including running the department unsupervised. I have also participated in professional retail meetings with representatives from suppliers, leading wallpaper designers and manufacturing companies as they briefed us on their latest collections of paints, furnishings, wallpapers and fabrics.

Placement Year

Bothy Threads

Two months experience with Bothy Threads in the Lake District culminated in the design and marketing of a range of eight Blackwork embroidery kits which are now available on over 80 websites in 16 countries world-wide.

The Nutmeg Company

I was able to work at the Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace with the Nutmeg Company, and gained experience in marketing, kit-design, costing, stock control and production.

Stitches in Time

At Stitches, a London based social enterprise charity, I stitched with the elderly and women from culturally diverse backgrounds to decrease social isolation and empower them to build confidence.

My final three months were spent as a PR Specialist, Upcycling Specialist and Product Lister at the Oxfam Hub in Batley, Yorkshire. This was a great opportunity to build on my time management, refine more of my embroidery skills and to use various social media platforms professionally to raise awareness and help continue building online presence. I was also entrusted with taking charge of a corporate day event, teaching members of YSB how to list items for sale. Together we raised £3,500 in a single afternoon.

Voluntary Work

I have always been passionate about volunteering and have taken part in various charitable roles since the age of fourteen. I acted as a young leader at Brownies and spent my lunch breaks assisting in English Enrichment Classes during Sixth Form. These involved mentoring younger students with various first languages and those having difficulty with their literacy skills and grammar. I also assisted at Bobtails Rabbit and Guinea Pig Rescue Centre for 2 years.
